  6. -What is InWatch?
  7.     
  8.     InWatch is a Windows program that "Watches" programs when they are 
  9. being installed in Windows.  Essentially what it does is create backup copies 
  10. of your configuration files (AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS, WIN.INI, SYSTEM.INI, 
  11. REG.DAT) and creates a list of the files that are in your Root, Windows and 
  12. Windows System directories.  After you install an application, you use InWatch's
  13. compare feature to compare your present configuration files and directory listings 
  14. with the backups created previously.  InWatch will create an ASCII file that 
  15. will show you exactly every line that has changed in your configuration
  16. files, and every file and directory that has been updated in or added to your 
  17. Root, Windows and Windows System directories.
  18.  
  19. -What do I need to run InWatch?
  20.  
  21.     You need Microsoft Windows 3.1 and 1MB of hard disk space.
  22.  
  23. -How do I install InWatch?
  24.  
  25.     Run the INSTALL.EXE program from windows.  INSTALL will ask where you
  26. want to install InWatch, defaulting to C:\INWATCH. After selecting the directory,
  27. it will then copy the InWatch files to that directory.  INSTALL will then create 
  28. a program group and items in program manager.
  29.  
  30. -Why should I use InWatch?
  31.  
  32.     Many applications, especially newer ones, make many changes to your 
  33. configuration files and add lots of files to your windows and windows system 
  34. directories.  Some application suites add more than 100 lines to your WIN.INI 
  35. file.  By using InWatch you will know every modification each application has 
  36. made to your system. If you later decide to remove an application, you can use
  37. the uninstall function to remove the application.
  38.  
  39. -Is it hard to use?
  40.  
  41.     No.  There is full on-line help available from the application, just
  42. click on the HELP button. Please note that this is a beta release and the on-line
  43. help in this release does not reflect the changes or added features.
  44.  
  45. -How do I use InWatch?
  46.   These are the steps you take to use InWatch:
  47. 1. Load InWatch.
  48. 2. Select the Backup directory. The backup directory can be any directory 
  49.    (but preferably the InWatch directory).
  50. 3. Press the BACKUP button (This makes back-up copies of the configuration 
  51.    files and directory listings).
  52. 4. Install any windows application.
  53. 5. Press the COMPARE button. You will be prompted for a description and
  54.    filename for the COMPARE file. An ASCII (text-only) file will be created
  55.    in the backup directory, with the name you supplied.
  56. YOU'RE DONE! That's all there is to it! Now when you need to remove this 
  57. application from your hard disk, click on uninstall, select the compare file
  58. and InWatch will remove this program.
  59.  
  60. -New features with this version of InWatch:
  61.  
  62. 1. Version 1.9 adds an uninstall function.
  63.  
  64. 2. Includes a few minor bug fixes.
  65.  
  66. 3. Help file has been updated.
  67.  
  68. 4. Now tracks files/directories added to root directory as well.
  69.  
  70. 5. Option for a brief compare file.
  71.  
  72. 6. Compare function works more reliably, and handles device= lines better.
  73.  
  74. 7. Adds compare and uninstall of changes to REG.DAT (registration database) file.

  77. INWATCH IS SHAREWARE!!!!!!!
  78.  
  79.  -What is SHAREWARE?  Shareware is software that is freely distributed to 
  80. people so they can try it before they buy it.  When you receive a copy of a 
  81. shareware program, you are given a specified period of time, in which you 
  82. may decide if you like the program and find it useful.  If you do like the 
  83. program, or continue to use the program past the specified period of time, 
  84. you MUST send a registration fee to the author of the program. 
  85.   
  86.   When you register InWatch, you will receive an updated version of the 
  87. program on disk and printed documentation.  The updated version will include
  88. the Optimize feature, which looks at your configuration files and tells you
  89. what settings might work better for your setup, or what settings are 
  90. available only through in-depth knowledge of these files.
  91.  
  92.   InWatch registration is US$14.95 or CAN$19.95.  You may try this program
  93. for 30 days, at the end of which you MUST register it or discontinue using 
  94. it.  You are free to pass this program, in its original, unmodified form, 
  95. to anyone you wish.  If you find this program useful, or use it past the

  111. Just as a reminder, you may try InWatch for 30 days, after which you MUST
  112. submit the above amount to register the program, or discontinue using the

  115. ----------TECHNICAL NOTES---------------
  116. BWCC.DLL:
  117. InWatch was designed using the 9/9/93 (152304 bytes) version of the BWCC.DLL,
  118. which is the Borland Windows Custom Controls. Several other popular programs
  119. use this DLL. InWatch may not appear properly if an older version of this DLL
  120. is being used on your system. If you experience any problems, you should rename
  121. the BWCC.DLL in your Windows System directory to BWCC.OLD, and COPY the version
  122. that comes with InWatch to the Windows System directory. BWCC.DLL is backward 
  123. compatible, so there shouldn't be any problems using the new version of the DLL
  124. with programs designed for the older version. If this does cause a problem to other
  125. programs, delete the BWCC.DLL from the Windows System dir, and rename BWCC.OLD to
  126. BWCC.DLL.
  127.  
  128. UNINSTALLING and .GRP files:
  129. Uninstall will delete the .grp file during uninstall, and remove the group from
  130. program manager. Occasionally the .grp file will be deleted from the Windows dir,
  131. but not removed from Program Manager. This usually happens when the group has a
  132. very odd name like: 'Test(R) group++><'. If the .grp file is deleted, but not removed
  133. from progman, Windows will give an error the next time to run it. Just remove the 
  134. group by click once on it while it is minimized, and press the DELETE key.
  135.  
  136. SHARE.EXE (sharing violations)
  137. If you have SHARE.EXE (or vshare.386) installed on your system, you may occasionally
  138. experience a 'sharing violation' when Autotrak runs, at Windows exit. This usually
  139. indicates that one of your configuration files was left 'open' by another program,
  140. and when Autotrak tries to access it, SHARE causes a violation. Usually just clicking
  141. on 'Retry' will clear the problem.
  142.  
  143. MOVING INWATCH TO A DIFFERENT DIRECTORY:
  144. -move all inwatch files (see list below) to the new directory.
  145. -change references (Directory= and Location=) in INWATCH.INI, located
  146.  in the Windows directory to reflect the new location.
  147. -Change RUN= line in [windows] section of WIN.INI to reflect new location
  148.  of AUTOTRAK.EXE, if you had autotrak enabled.
  149.  
  150. UNINSTALLING INWATCH:
  151. -If you created a new directory when installing inwatch, remove this directory
  152.  and all the files in it, and INWATCH.INI from the Windows directory.
  153. -If you installed InWatch to an existing directory, delete the following files:
  154. INWATCH.EXE
  155. INWATCHH.HLP
  156. AUTOTRAK.EXE
  157. BWCC.DLL
  158. ORDER.FRM
  159. README.TXT
  160. INWATCH.INI (From Windows directory)
  161. *.IWB
  162. *.ATC
  163. *.ATB
  164. *.IWC
  165. *.ATU
  166. *.IWU
  167. *.LOG
